In response to the further downturn in the economy UPS has decided to close its Sandy Springs Based Office in Atlanta. It will have to cut 1,800 administrative and management positions nationwide. Atlanta's workers will be spared most of the losses as UPS replants itself in the field. The office in Spring Fields to be closed had 50 to 60 employees and the locals will be offered severance package, early retirement or will be eligible potentially for other jobs. The freight carrier is expecting better earnings because of the changes in the infra structure, and is expecting its earnings to rise between 73 and 75 cents a diluted share which is a improvement over 58 and 65 cents. In order to manage its domestic structure and streamline it, UPS is cutting its United States regions from 5 to 3 moreover the district regions are getting slashed from 46 to 20 too. Geographically in and around Atlanta UPS has about 10,000 employees however the operations of only the Sandy Springs are to be closed and the south-eastern regional headquarter which controlled territory from Maryland to Florida will have to be added into the eastern division which is much larger and takes care of states from Maine to Florida. UPS spokesman Mr. Norman Black believes that they have the technology and the management skills which will enable them to successfully manage much larger areas and that the offices ones consolidated will help them be more effective in the years to come. Mr. Black also further added that as in the past they have always preferred attrition rather than layoffs to reduce its employee number and will continue the same principle while closing its Atlanta based Sandy Springs operation. |
