Author Gailya Silhan lays out a step-by-step plan to landing one's dream job in What Your Teachers Didn't Teach You: How to Get a Job After College
What Your Teachers Didn't Teach You: How to Get a Job After College by Gailya Silhan offers a guide for college graduates on how to develop and market their skills to obtain the kind of job they desire. "In today's poor job market, What Your Teachers Didn't Teach You reaches out to college graduates with a step-by-step blueprint to help them get hired," says Silhan. In an effort to challenge readers, Silhan offers them a series of exercises aimed at helping them to discover their strengths and identify their specific skills. She believes the hardest obstacle for a new graduate is reaching the decision maker within a company and therefore provides five ways to help readers do just that. Furthermore, Silhan states that to find a job, one must do research, be very clear about the job title they seek, network and deliver a first-rate interview. Ultimately, it is Silhan's hope to give readers the proper tools to define and focus their job search and to transition into the "real world" feeling confident and prepared. The author says, "My own daughter will graduate in 2011 and has already been told her opportunities for finding the job she wants are virtually impossible." As I say in the book, "Someone is going to be hired; we just have to make sure it's you." Written for both parents and soon-to-be graduates, Silhan contends that What Your Teachers Didn't Teach You is the perfect preparation tool for getting one's first job. Having mentored students as well as her own children through the post-college job search, Silhan realized that while most colleges have great resources, not all students will take advantage of what is offered. "Getting your first job is difficult, but it's not brain surgery. If you follow the path laid out, you can be well on your way to the job of your dreams," she says.
