Georgia Students for Public Higher Education (GSPHE) is a grass-roots coalition of students, alumni, faculty, campus workers, and friends of the University System of Georgia (USG) formed in the fall of 2009 in response to recurring increases in supplemental fees. Members of GSPHE represent every college and university within the USG and are united in purpose to maintain equitable access to higher education in the state of Georgia. Students recognize the severity of the economic challenges that the state of Georgia is facing. However, the USG represents only 12% of the state budget, and we see it as very unfair for the USG to cover 30% of the state's budget gap. We advocate for creative measures to close this budget gap and restore competition and excellence within our institutions of higher education.GSPHE asks that all Georgians who are concerned about higher education join us on March 15. They will be meeting Monday, March 15, 2010, at 10:00 am at the steps in front of the Georgia State Capitol, 214 State Capitol, Atlanta, GA, where there will be a press conference held. Georgia State Senators Nan Orrock and Vincent Fort and Representative Doug McKillip have expressed sympathy with GSPHE. Sen. Fort and Rep. McKillip (and possibly Sen. Orrock) have agreed to speak at this press conference. Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites |
