AN OPEN LETTER TO MY CONSTITUENTS REGARDING AJC ARTICLE:

Dear Fellow Georgians,

I understand the public concern about Georgia's current economic and political state. The situation is very serious and the public is very frustrated--they are right to be. The current system is destroying public confidence in politicians.  I believe it must be repaired as soon as possible.

For those of you whom I have not yet had the pleasure to meet, my name is Will Avery, and I am running to represent YOU in Atlanta.  My wife, Laurien, and I have chosen East Paulding County to be the place where we will raise our family--which is currently made up of myself and Laurien, our daughter Norah, our two dogs, Marley and Matilda, and our two cats, Ella and Kaipo.  Since graduating from the University of Georgia, I have spent my time in West Cobb and East Paulding as an archaeologist and a land surveyor, while Laurien has been teaching at North Paulding High School.  I currently am working on my Master's degree at the University of West Georgia, where I also am working as a teacher and researcher in the university's history department.

I believe that under the Gold Dome, we need strong leadership that will represent Georgia's working middle class--folks just like you and me.  We need someone who will not raise our taxes, someone who will preserve a high quality of education, and someone who will make sure that government works for us.  For too long, the State of Georgia has endured career politicians who tend to the interests of big corporations over the interests of real Georgians like you and me.  We have seen our Representatives continuously vote against education, against small businesses, and against working class Georgians, and NOW is the time to stop all of that.

I uniquely understand the necessity and importance of quality public education.  As the son of two teachers, Marisue and Cal, I have been the product of Georgia's public education system since Kindergarten.  My wife (whose mother is also a teacher) and I are educators as well, and we plan to enroll Norah, in the Paulding County School System when she is old enough to attend.  This is why I am passionate about ensuring the success of Georgia's public schools.

I believe that:
- Our elected leaders have shown how little they value our children's future, and that current representation under the Gold Dome has proven that education is not a priority as demonstrated through deep budget cuts on the backs of the next generation.
- There should be zero cuts to public schools, and as your Representative, I can make a change to state policy as it deals with our children's education
- Rather than making blanket cuts to our schools, legislators should close the gaps in the budget by finding alternative sources of revenue outside of raising taxes.
- Teachers should not be furloughed and class size should not be increased.
- Children must be given every opportunity to obtain a college degree.  As a strong proponent of higher education, I call for continued funding of the HOPE Scholarship program, for support of public higher educational institutes, and for the expansion of Georgia's community and technical college system to incorporate more areas, including Paulding County.

We must work to protect education, to keep it funded, and to keep it sacred.  As your next state representative from Paulding County, these are the things that I promise to do.  I really do understand why people have lost faith in politics, and I would very much welcome your views on what you want to see done to start cleaning up the system.  You can always call me for a sympathetic ear, and I encourage you to take me up on that offer!  I'm here, working for the future and for you.

I hope that I can earn your vote in November's election.  Even more, I hope that I can speak with every East Paulding resident about what you want from your Representative.  I invite you to join me and my family at a Campaign Kickoff Picnic to be held on Saturday, June 5 at 11:00AM at Leggett Park in Hiram, GA.  (Drinks and light refreshments will be provided).  See you then!

With kind regards,
WILL H. AVERY
