Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is pretty proud these days. He wants everyone to know that since he took office in January of this year following a very close runoff election, violent crime in Atlanta has dropped a whopping 22%, and overall crime in every category has been reduced by almost 15%, figures which the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms. While the figures are indeed impressive, and some say they speak to Mayor Reed's commitment to improve the Police Department's relationship with the community, others are questioning the correlation. Is the improvement due to the addition these last few months of 150 or so additional officers on the streets, as well as the Mayor's other programs, or is it merely an anomaly caused by the reduction in the number of Tech students, since most are away for the summer? Many recall that the campus area had been the site of a number of robberies over previous months, and some online writers are suggesting that the main reason the city is seeing a reduction in the crimes is that there has been a shortage of victims now that the students have gone home for the summer. Whoever is correct - and perhaps both sides are partially right - many Atlantians are breathing a little easier, the Mayor not the least of them. Only time will tell whether this is indeed a trend, or just a summer vacation for some of the criminals. Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites |
