Thirty-nine-year-old Amy Windom of Grant Park credits her toes for possibly helping to save her life. She's also grateful for the inspiring stories she has read about paraplegics who were able to do incredible things with their feet. While Ms. Windom is no paraplegic, she did find herself in a bind - literally - after a home invasion robbery, and was able to type her way to freedom with her toes, using her laptop computer to send a distress message to her boyfriend. Ms. Windom was sleeping peacefully around midnight Tuesday morning when a masked and armed intruder found his way into her Glenwood Avenue home. After a brief struggle he tied her hands securely to her bed post with her shoe laces. He stayed about an hour, ultimately taking off with some electronics and his victim's recently purchased car, an off-white 2009 Acura STX (Georgia tag BGU 8496). Fortunately Ms. Windom had convinced the gunman to leave her laptop behind, telling him that it could easily be traced if he took it. After a long period of screaming for help and trying in vain to break free, she realized that her computer could be her "Escape" key. Dragging the laptop over with her feet she pried it open, and then used one big toe as a mouse while grasping the power cord between the toes of her other foot. Although her big toe was too large to hit individual keys, she didn't let that faze her. Following a futile search for a workable way to contact 911 online, Ms. Windom remembered that her boyfriend is an early riser, so she toe-typed a one-word email to him: "Help." He immediately responded, and in a series of brief messages she explained what had happened. Her boyfriend contacted the police, and when they arrived at her home early Tuesday morning they found her tied up. The intruder had also struck her on the forehead with his gun; she was treated on the scene for lacerations. Ms. Windom says the gunman touched her inappropriately but did not sexually assault her. She is grateful he didn't do more harm, adding that she repeatedly asked him not to hurt her and told him she believed that he wouldn't. Her main motivation for talking about her ordeal, she explains, is "to get this guy caught." She adds that she doesn't have the prettiest toes, but they did come in handy in the wee hours of the night. That laptop came in pretty handy as well. It kind of gives a whole new meaning to the term, "digital age." Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites |
