It's getting so you can't swing a dead cat around The Big Peach without hitting a movie crew. It seems the film crews are everywhere these days. In Midtown, ABC Family has been shooting a film called Ex Mas Carol, yet another contemporary take on the beloved Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. The Cartoon Network is hard at work on a project called Neverfail in Decatur/Druid Hills, and Inman Park is playing host to Tyler Perry's next Madea film.

But perhaps the biggest news of all is that the remake of the classic 1980s dance film Footloose is being shot in the Atlanta area, with Dennis Quaid in the preacher role John Lithgow played in the original, and newcomer Kenny Warmold taking over Kevin Bacon's role. Craig Brewer is directing, and shooting is expected to last through November.

Atlanta residents have a chance to cut loose and join the fun at an open casting call for extras this Thursday, August 26 from 4-6 PM at Cowboys Bar in Kennesaw. A motley assortment of people 18 and over is needed; those selected will be paid industry rates and will receive free parking as well. Details can be found on the Bigfoot Atlanta blog's August 21 post: http://bigfootatl.blogspot.com/2010/08/open-call-thursday-august-26th.html

In truth, Atlanta is a popular location for filmmaking, playing host to no less than 18 big-screen productions and 22 television shows last year alone - among them The Blind Side and Zombieland. At least part of this activity is the fruit of the 2008 Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, which provides aggressive incentives for movie makers. In addition the city seems poised to be the seat of the renaissance of Deep South film production, with the creation of new state-of-the-art facilities at the old Lakewood Fairgrounds. These fairgrounds were the location, in 1977 and 1980, for Burt Reynolds' first two Smokey and the Bandit movies; the racetrack scenes were shot at the Lakewood Speedway. Though the fairgrounds, presently overrun with kudzu, are located in a poor and dilapidated section of the city, the project's boosters believe that once the transformation is complete, the venue will attract some of the biggest stars of Hollywood.

So those who miss out on the Footloose casting call have no reason to fret, given Atlanta's growing status as a movie-making magnet. For frequent updates about opportunities, check out Acme Casting Atlanta's Twitter page at http://twitter.com/AcmeCastingATL.
