His 2007 autobiography described as both enthralling and absolute fiction

Atlanta, GA: This past Saturday, self-proclaimed CIA assassin and former U.S. Army reservist Roland Haas died after shooting himself in the leg and piercing his femoral artery, according to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office. Officials are calling the death accidental.

In his 2007 memoir, Haas claimed that as a 19-year-old university student, he had been recruited by the CIA to become a deep-cover operative - in plain terms, an assassin. His story, "Enter the Past Tense: My Secret Life as a CIA Assassin," which has been dismissed as pure fiction in some online discussion groups and blogs, but officially ignored, is reminiscent of the events detailed in any number of Cold-War fiction novels, which is where some of Haas' detractors say he got his information. Loosely knit groups devoted to exposing those who make false claims about their government service have claimed that even the logistics and timeline of the events he described were impossible. As would be expected, however, some conspiracy theorists are jumping on the story as if it were the Shroud of Turin, delivered by black helicopter.

Whatever the truth about Haas' career and the manner of his death, it is known that he was suffering from serious health challenges, and was apparently in a state of diabetic shock when he pulled his car off the road, got out, and apparently shot himself. Yet it does leave one to wonder whether a supposedly highly-trained undercover intelligence operative would have an "accident" of this nature. We'll likely never know, but it wouldn't be surprising if his story turned up as a movie of the week sometime in the future.
