An Open Letter to The Honorable George "Sonny" Perdue, The Georgia General Assembly, Chancellor Erroll B. Davis, and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has been released by Georgia Students for Public Higher Education:

"During the past weeks, we have been willing actors in the political theatre that resulted in the wake of past and proposed budget cuts to the University System of Georgia (USG).  Students enrolled in USG institutions have raised their voices in protest against budget cuts that would cripple the USG, reduce access to quality, higher education, and compromise the prosperity and well-being of the State of Georgia for years to come."

Today, students from colleges and universities across Georgia will gather at the Georgia State Capitol to raise their voices as one to affirm the value of higher education and to denounce any attempt to dismantle the USG or diminish the academic standing of its institutions.  The opportunity to obtain a higher education must also remain financially accessible for all Georgians."

"We have learned a difficult lesson.  We have learned how deeply we value educational opportunity and how easily it can be taken away.  We have also learned that we must take responsibility for safeguarding the opportunity to obtain quality, higher education for ourselves and generations of Georgians to come.  Please be assured that you can depend on our continued vigilance as you appropriate funds and administer the USG.  Beyond that, we will continue to register new voters, and we will support candidates who demonstrate that they value higher education."

"Eventually, your political theatre will conclude.  However, we have found our voices and our passion, and we will not be dissuaded from insisting that we be represented by those we have elected and those whose salaries we pay.  Today's rally is not the final act."
